China Launches New Military Drills Around Taiwan.

China has launched new military drills near Taiwan, which serve as a warning against "separatist actions by Taiwan independence forces".
This statement was condemned by the governments of Taipei and Washington, reports Reuters.
The Eastern Theatre Command of China's military stated that the "Joint Sword-2024B" exercises are being conducted in the Taiwan Strait and areas to the north, south and east of Taiwan.
"The exercises also serve as a stern warning to the separatist actions of Taiwan independence forces. This is a legitimate and necessary operation to protect national sovereignty and unity," the command's statement said.
Taiwan responded by calling these exercises "blatant provocations" that seriously undermine regional peace and stability.
"President Lai has already expressed his goodwill in his National Day speech and is ready to jointly assume responsibility with the Chinese communists to maintain peace in the Taiwan Strait," Taiwan stated.
Joseph Wu, Secretary General of Taiwan's National Security Council, stated that Taiwan will remain "vigilant," but will be "restrained and responsible, maintaining the status quo in the Taiwan Strait."
The Chinese state newspaper "Liberation Army Daily" wrote: "Those who play with fire get burned!" "As long as the provocations of 'Taiwan independence' continue, the PLA's actions to defend national sovereignty and territorial integrity will not cease," the newspaper added.
